As one of the first universities I looked at I was initially drawn by the city itself and the diversity of style in the area.  After viewing the gallery of students work I knew this course would be right for me. I enjoyed the hands on approach with model making combined with drawing and the abundance of facilities available since the merger of the two university departments. This approach suits me more than other courses and is the perfect way to begin my development into an architect. The city has fantastic history and a beautiful historic foundation which is constantly being improved, regenerated and added to. I think Manchester would be a perfect place for me to study Architecture as the city and university would be so compatible to me.

A building I have recently visited is the Norman Foster designed ‘Albion Riverside’ in Battersea. I enjoyed the undulating shape of each floor combined with the reflective glass; mimicking the river below. The back of the building is different in shape; a more spherical shape, which curves parallel to the road. Although I like the shape of this part of the building I am not as keen on the windows. They are much more rigid in shape and I feel this gives too harsh a contrast with the front of the building. Overall I’d say this is a very clever building in the way it complements its surroundings and a beautiful addition to that part of the Thames.

My favourite architect at the moment is Japanese architect Terunobu Fujimori. I have become intrigued by his vernacular style and interesting way of using materials. He works very well by combining man made structure with organic life which gives his work a very natural sculptural feel. I also respect how he designs every component of his buildings to ensure that his theme is constant.  

A building I would like to visit is the Aspire Tower in Qatar. This part of the world is creating some of the most outrageous and limitless architecture in the world and this is no exception. The torch shaped structure stands 240m high and has an exterior formed from a wire exoskeleton. The building also has lighting effects at night. This is not my favourite building but it would be spectacular to experience in person. I don’t think photos do this building justice, as they do not capture the textures and presence of the building.
